  1. Appalachia has the same poverty levels as areas in the big cities. The difference, besides skin color, is that Appalachia has poverty in families with an intact father and mother. It requires more than single mothers and villages to raise a family. This shows up in the dramatically lower level of violent crime present. Appalachia is below the national average while the cities are well above the national average. Check the "Woodpile Report" for more details.
